About AKTrails
AKTrails is a mobile mapping website focused on providing Alaska trails data to users. Of course, there are many trails-mapping applications and web sites available, but very few contain comprehensive trails information for Alaska. AKTrails does not develop trails data but sources data from a wide variety of public mapping service providers. Some Trails data are already integrated into the base maps from providers such as OSM, USGS, and ESRI. Other trails data are presented as overlays on top of these base maps. The trails overlays come from public data providers including U.S Federal agencies, municipalities, boroughs, and Alaska state agencies. We fully appreciate the concept of "open data" which allows us to use these agencies' data and provide it to you.
Credits
AKTrails is developed by Integrated Geospatial LLC of Anchorage Alaska. With over 30 years of programming and geospatial experience, we just like doing this stuff.
No Fees
AKTrails is currently provided free from any fees or advertising. The application/web-site itself is not open source as I haven't gotten that far into development to warrent it. It's possible that in the future we'll incorporate links to appropriate vendors if we can do so without adversely affecting functionality or user experience. But, for now it's a maintained on a volunteer basis. I don't anticipate ever charging a subscription as I hate that myself.
